Building upon the success of the "First International Conference on Rebuilding the Health Sector in Gaza," the second conference, titled "Justice for Gaza: The Role of International Law in Protecting Health, Education, and Civil Society Amidst Conflict," was co-organized by the Gaza Health Initiative (GHI) and the American University of Beirut (AUB).
The conference addressed the challenges to the implementation of international law; specifically, in the domains of healthcare, medical education, and civil society.
The conference mission is to consolidate the voices of health practitioners, academicians, legal experts, media professionals, human rights advocates and humanitarian organizations in support of the enforcement of international law in Gaza. In addition, to strengthen the relationships formed during the first conference and engage new allies, partners, and influencers that are dedicated to human rights, medical education, and access to health for the people in Palestine.
With a focus on Gaza, the conference aimed to protect and rebuild the healthcare sector; protect and secure the future of medical education and academic institutions; promote legal efforts to restore peace, equity, and human rights; address the humanitarian aid, social, and civic impact of the war in Gaza; and explore the role of mainstream and social media in shaping the narrative
The conference brought together health practitioners, academics, legal experts, media professionals, human rights advocates and leaders of humanitarian organizations to support the enforcement of international law in Gaza. It featured an array of distinguished high-profile professionals from diverse fields who served as panelists, moderators, and contributors. Many of these individuals have dedicated years of service to Gaza in medical education, healthcare, human rights, and other sectors, and have made significant contributions to their fields in Palestine, the region, and the world.
The first scholars meeting took place on the side of the second international conference. This meeting was attended by presidents and deans of universities from several countries. It's primary mission was to develop a shared understanding and a collectively defined agreement aimed at aiding Palestinian universities, medical schools, public health schools, hospitals & clinics in their efforts to recover, grow, become more resilient, and better serve their communities.
