Gaza Health Initiative and Project HOPE Hold High-Level Meeting at Specialty Hospital in Amman to Strengthen Health Cooperation for Gaza in particular on Medical Evacuation and Treatment of Gaza’s Children in Jordan

Amman – July 23, 2025 – Gaza Health Initiative (GHI) held a high-level meeting with representatives from U.S.-based humanitarian organization Project HOPE at the Specialty Hospital in Amman, Jordan. The meeting focused on strengthening health sector collaboration, with a particular emphasis on the medical evacuation and treatment of children from Gaza in Jordan.

The meeting began with welcoming remarks from the GHI team, who highlighted the importance of in-person coordination following earlier discussions in Istanbul. Both organizations reaffirmed their shared commitment to formalizing a strategic partnership to better respond to the urgent healthcare needs in Gaza, especially for vulnerable children affected by war-related injuries and chronic conditions.

Mr. Rabih Torbay, CEO of Project HOPE, provided an overview of the organization’s ongoing operations in Gaza, including five active clinics serving approximately 7,000 patients per week. He outlined critical challenges such as a severe shortage of medical supplies, growing food insecurity, security threats to staff and patients, and a dire cash crisis that is limiting access to basic needs and salaries.

Dr. Fawzi Al-Hammouri, CEO Executive chair “Gaza Health Initiative,” reviewed the latest developments in the program to evacuate sick children from Gaza to Jordan, noting that 117 children have been received over the past few months in private hospitals, which are currently covering the full cost of treatment.

He pointed out that the Jordanian government had previously announced its support for the transfer of up to 2,000 children under the "Jordanian Medical Corridor" initiative launched by His Majesty King Abdullah II to treat children from Gaza in Jordanian hospitals, noting that a number of them have already been received in private hospitals.

He also noted that the initiative, under his leadership, is actively working to build partnerships with supporters both locally and internationally to ensure the continued treatment of Palestinian children coming from Gaza and to secure the financial resources needed to cover the increasing costs of medical care, especially in light of the growing number of cases and the complex conditions resulting from the war.

Both parties explored mechanisms for improving coordination, including pre-transfer assessments through Project HOPE clinics in Gaza, post-treatment follow-up care, and donor engagement to ensure financial sustainability. Project HOPE offered virtual mental health training for GHI medics, support for rebuilding Gaza’s health system, and assistance in mobilizing international partners holding Gaza-designated funds.

The two parties also emphasized the need for rigorous documentation of the humanitarian and health crisis in Gaza for advocacy, academic research, and legal processes. They discussed co-authoring medical publications and supporting international legal testimony through verified medical records and firsthand accounts.

The meeting concluded with strong mutual appreciation and a shared vision for continued collaboration to strengthen Gaza’s health system—both in emergency response and in long-term capacity building, with a special focus on the safe evacuation and care of Gaza’s children.
